Desiderata by Max Ehrman (1952)

Craig's Quotes

    • Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

    • and remember what peace there may be in silence.

    • As far as possible without surrender

    • be on good terms with all persons.

    • Speak your truth quietly and clearly;

    • and listen to others,

    • even the dull and the ignorant;

    • they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

The Writing Journey

#  First (“baby”) steps on the long and winding road that is “the writing journey”

One of my first letters to the newspaper (the Cape Times in 1986, I think) on the long and winding road that is “the writing journey” (written from NZ – there was a State of Emergency in South Africa at the time). Incidentally, this letter was heavily censored by the newspaper according to the laws under the State of Emergency at the  time.

This letter caused a “bit of a stir” in South Africa (and a lot of stress to us some years later on our return to Cape Town in a “state of devastation” – that’s covered fully in many other books) in early Feb 1988. “Traitors!”

The Truth and Reconciliation challenge

The International Correspondent: Journalism for Peace (Peace Pursuit)

When the apartheid regime was overthrown in South Africa, the problem of how to deal with the past remained.

After so many years of brutality, would punishing historic crimes against humanity threaten the future peace of the new Rainbow Nation?

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission aimed to help South Africans bear the burden of their racist history. Judge Sisi Khampepe shares her memories of serving on it.
